 01/12/23 Update-  Easy and safe  access is a consideration hiking this time of year as some of the  roads to the trails in the deeper woods may be icy and not safe to travel on.  Lets look at a couple of easy and safer ones if weather screws access up. The 12 minute away   Natural Bridge State Park has an expanded Trail system, one takes you under the 215' tall natural wonder upstream to a set of falls. The Park  is a favorite of Lodge guests  There is an admission charge on this one. The  5 minute away Chessie Rails to Trails his a great easily accessible hike  down the very scenic Maury River. We are happy to help you plan 

   The further away ones may require a little weather research before heading out. Crabtree Falls is one of the best waterfall hikes in Virginia with various cascades dropping over 1700 ' in elevation. Cold Mountain hike in the National Forest offers one of the best 360 degree  Vistas around  at 4050'  and includes a section of the Appalachian Trail.  We have lots of maps, local knowledge and  a detailed Trail and Outdoor book here at the Lodge that will help give you ideas in addition to those listed on our Outdoor Adventure page here.  http://www.llodge.com/outdoor-adventures/hiking-adventures.htm  Please call me direct for more personilized info for planning your stay with us. Lexington-Rockbridge County area and most of my spare time is spent enjoying nature or partaking in an outdoor activity. Outstanding Introduction to Fly fishing Trips Now along with Trips for the more experienced types. We offer these daily, reservations are required. We   have them available on Sundays which are great times for those pressed to get out during the week. 

Trout Fishing and Relaxing!

My sister and I spent a week at Llewellyn Lodge to relax and enjoy some trout fishing. John was a wonderful host fixing us a great breakfast every morning followed by a fantastic day fishing. The accommodations were very comfortable and clean.

Winter-- 2023,  -   Waterfall, streamside and Vista hikes are great right now and taking a picnic along is highly recommended. Our guided flyfishing trips www.vatrout.com are highly recommended  this month . Our  Intro to Flyfishing  Trip is one of the best in Virginia.. A great little  walking experience starting from the Lodge front door that our guests guests all love is  the little Woods Creek Trail  Loop in town which follows a dandy little stream, Start from the Lodge and do either  3.5 or 5 miles without leaving the town. Enjoy both VMI and W&L campuses as well wildlife along the way. The Chessie Trails to trails  5 minutes drive from the Lodge is a down and back trail which follows the very scenic Maury River- wildlife viewing is usually great.  We have several more  loop hikes that include portions of the Appalachian Trail. Cold- Mountain Old Hotel trail is one of the best trails in Va- 5.75 long in the George Washington National Forest -loop which includes 2 miles on the Appachian Trail- `1400' elevation change to summit at 4050' The breathtaking 360 deg view is awesome. We have plenty more in our hiking book. Crabtree Falls have  1700' of cascading waderfalls to enjoy, There are many other scenic trails to consider as well including many that follow streams in the National Forests very close to the Lodge.

Other Recommended Hikes This Month:

Cold Mt.-Old Hotel Trail mile Loop includes Appalachian Trail with 360 degree view at 4050' Elev. This one is hard to beat. better than anything on the Skyline Drive- 1400' elev. change

Crabtree Falls- Highest cascade of Falls E. of the Mississippi -scenic dive up the Blue Ridge Parkway to get there- can access the Appalachian Trail also-good workout.

Roaring Run Day Use National Forest Area- Features a nice little.6 mile walk up a high energy mountain trout stream to a set of 30' falls. Great for wildflower study, the fast water will energize you for sure.

Hidden Valley Trail- Easy hike in Bath County- National Forest hike up the Jackson River- lots of wildflowers and wild game- trout fishing. Enjoy the historic Warm Springs Pools on te way back as you take the healing waters in structures that back into the 1700's.

Cornelius Loop- This is a 7.5 mile hike that takes up one dandy little native Brook trout streams and brings you down another with the beautiful Apple Orchard Falls along the way. You also get to experience hiking on the Appalachian Trail

Rich Hole Wilderness- can be done as an up and back into black bear country for a great work out from the North end. Trail crosses North Branch, native Brook trout stream

Bear Loop Trail- Higher Elevation Vista Hike with 50 mile views of the Shenandoah Valley & Blue ridge Mountains to the East and Alleghenies to the West,

 Two nice golf courses are closeby, we can get you on the private  very scenic Lexington Golf and Country Club 3 minutes to the first tee box. The public Vista Links course is only 10 minutes from the Lodge. January and February always have a few golfing days.

Twin Rivers Canoe Livery in Buchanan 20 minutes down the road  has some terrific canoe and kayak trips this month. The James River has year round water for canoeing.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL THIS MONTH- 12- 16 miles From the Lodge, we have several loop hikes which gives our hikers a chance to walk a part of it. One great thing about our Llewellyn Lodge location is the fairly short distance to the Appalachian Trail.  I have several top of chart loop hikes that I recommend that include walking 1-5 miles on this nationally acclaimed linial park. One is a 5.75 one that rewards you with a 360 degree view at 4050' above sea level. Another 7 miler takes you up a beautiful native Brook trout stream, tyou then transverse the AT and complete the loop down another very scenic native trout stream. Yet another offering which can include the AT rakes you up the highest set of waterfalls East of the Mississippi. I'll be happy to help you plan a personilized  1 or multiple day adventure. All of our warm, cozy and comfortable rooms are all individually decorated and have seen many repeat visitors over the years. Our rooms are updated frequently. All of the rooms are inspected yearly by 3 different  highly regarded travel &health industry professional organizations. All have private baths, unlimited high speed internet and A/C. Most have large HIGH-DEF televisions with movies on demand. Visitors over the years have included Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, actor singer Jimmy Dean, writer Tom Wolfe, columnist Miss Manners- (Judith Martin )and Columbian Ambassador to the U.S. Luis Villegas. Fishing guests have included U.S. Senator John Warner and Boston Celtic  great and Hall of Famer John Havlicek.

All beds have high quality and extremely comfortable Kingstown bedding. Both foam and feather pillows are provided. All rooms have thick exterior walls and thickly insulated windows, guests are always amazed at how quiet the interior of the Lodge is. This comfortable Room has a Shaker Pencil Post Queen Bed with our signature Kingsdown bedding, is guaranteed to give you a pleasant night’s sleep. This bedding is used is the same as used in several 5 star high end lodging facilities. It is a big reason we have so many repeat visitors. An activity guide in the room will give you plenty of ideas on getting the most out of your stay with us.

Foam, feather and simulated feathered pillows are most comfortable. All ofthe Lodge rooms have Oriental rugs with nice window treatments including room darkening shades in most. A reading chair and 2 reading lamps bedside the comfy bed make for great reading or internet exploring. This smaller , cozy room has lots of wicker & ivy and is always a favorite for those traveling lightly and on budget. The Queen bed has ivy backing and the Kingstown extra plush mattress will insure you get a comfortable nights’ rest after a day of exploring. This is the very same bedding used in many high end 5 star places and is one of the main reasons so many people come back enjoy the great comfort that they provide. A very cozy room, the Cherry Panel Queen bed with comfy Kingsdown mattress is a pure delight to spend a night or a week on. This is the same bedding used in many high end 5 star lodging properies and is a major reason we have so many repeat visitors.

An Activity guide composed by host John, 68 native of the area, has lots of ideas such Scenic Driving routes using Llewellyn Lodge as your base. John spends all of his break time in the outdoors when not doing B&B work and of course these areas are covered in detail.

Two chairs with ample lighting in this room make for perfect spots to read or plan your daily adventures while staying at the Lodge. Big screen high definition cable TV -on demand movies, events. A guest favorite for over 37 years with Cherry King bed and Kingstown mattress is extremely comfortable.  This is the same bedding used in many high end 5 star lodging facilities. It is one of the biggest reasons we have have so many repeat visitors, comfort is one thing travelers don't forget as we have found out in 32 years of innkeeping.

We have 2 very historic older homes next door, General Robert E. Lee used to visit one of them and the other was the home General Francis Smith, Viirginia Military Institute's first superintindent. Guests love the walk downtown by several more of these historic and architechually interesting homes.

Choose one of 2 reading chairs to enjoy a bestseller or treat you to a large High Definition cable television- on demand movies, events. Well stocked fridge and large private bath with tub/shower, fluffy Egyptian towels, hair dryer. Great space for long term stay. Free Wi-Fi. Keurig Coffee, tea maker, snacks.

Families and singles wanting to share a room find this the perfect room for their stay in Lexington, and favorite of those visiting Washington and Lee University or VMI. The bedding is Kingsdown, the same as used in many 5 star lodging facilities. Comfortable bedding is something that guests don't soon forget as we have found in our 37 years of innkeeping. An Activity guide composed by John your host and Lexington native of over 69 years, has lots of tips for Scenic driving, downtown exploring, shopping , outdoor activities and much more. A brick Colonial-style house, John and Ellen Roberts' Llewellyn Lodge is within easy walking distance of all of Lexington's historic sites. On the first floor are a cozy sitting room with working fireplace and a TV room. Guest rooms are decorated in exceptionally attractive color schemes. All rooms have ceiling fans, and four have TVs. Living Room and More

The living room at Llewellyn Lodge is always the perfect spot to meet after checking in or returning from a day of exploring. Several reading chairs and 2 sofas provide excellent space for gathering or just plain taking it easy. One of the most enjoyable elements in visiting Llewellyn Lodge is meeting and talking to fellow guests from all over the world. John and Ellen are always happy to help guests plot out their activities or make dinner or theatre reservations. Updated restaurant menus are provided, the walk is only 8-10 minutes through a scenic historic neighborhood. We were hot tea, lemonade, sodas, cookies and more in the warmer months. John’s ‘’Killer’’ Hot Chocolate, hot spiced cider and tea are wintertime favorites in front of a cozy fire.

A separate room for guests includes a well stocked fridge with snacks, a TV  and guest computer with high speed internet is also in the room. Fax and copy services are available. A copier is available for business or travel use, boarding passes, etc. Wine glasses and openers are always available. Fresh Virginia peanuts are offered along with other treats.

Our Screened Gazebo with ceiling fan and lighting is very popular with our guests. It’s a great place to unwind, read or to enjoy a nice drink or picnic. Wireless Internet is available there as well. The front porch swing is an old favorite and we have a more private side deck.

A separate guest computer with high speed access is also available free of charge. A copier is available for guest usage, many guests love to copy boarding passes to save time. Special notebooks detail area activities, outstanding scenic drives and much more are always at your bedside. Golf and tennis privileges are available at the local Lexington Golf and Country Club, 3 minutes away.
